Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

Last night I came over to my friend’s place. I brought some movies with me there. So after chatting and having some delicious home-made cakes and tea, we decided to watch the movie “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” together. I bought this DVD at Saigon Square last year but I had never had a chance to see it. The movie was kind of hard for me to follow. After we finished watching it, I still kept thinking to figure out what the movie wanted to say.

The movie was about the relationship between Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet). When Joel discovered that his girlfriend Clementine had undergone an experimental procedure to remove all memories of Joel, he was upset and frustrated. Then he decided to undergo the procedure as well, to erase his memories of Clementine… The question was thrown out there. If there were such a procedure to erase part of your memories, would you do that?

As for me, actually there is more than one time when I wanted to erase my memories of someone. Those memories are not necessarily bad, most of them are wonderful. But they made me feel sad and sometimes even hurt me. However, on a second thought, I don’t want to erase them at all. NO, I don’t want to! Those memories are a part of me. They somewhat shaped the way I behave. They made who I am today. So why do I have to remove them? Once they are erased, I know for sure, I will not be myself any more. So what’s the point of doing so? Why I have to lose myself because of someone?

Also, I found that when you want to forget someone, it’s not only your brain that needs to be erased. Just like the two characters in the movie, after all of their memories of each other were completely removed, they accidentally met on a train and they still had a feeling that they had met each other before. The morale is - when you love someone, you do not have only memories with them stored in your brain, but also love and feelings for them resided in your heart. Maybe someday scientists can invent such a procedure to erase some parts of your memories that you don’t want to keep in your brain. But in your heart, how can you remove the love and feelings you have for them?Image/

My best friend's wedding shower

A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.  ~Douglas Pagels

I just came back from Tiffin, Ohio. I spent my weekend there to attend my best friend’s wedding shower. I first knew H. when I was 11. We were classmates during our junior high school in TNSP. It has been 17 years since then. I remembered someone said there are three things that get better with time – wood, wine and friendship. Our friendship is very much like that. Throughout the years, we became closer and closer. Three of us - H., I and another girl named HH. - are always there for each other, sharing all our ups and downs. I couldn’t forget that H. was beside me in the hospital last year when I saw my dad for the last time. She was there with me at my saddest moment of my life. Now it’s my turn, but it’s totally different. I was there with her at the happiest moment of her life. So finally she found her significant half. I’m so happy for her. Congratulations, H.! I wish you and A. all the best that life can bring to you.

Here are ten things I love about H.’s wedding shower.

  1. I was the only friend of hers at the party.
  2. I was the only member from her side.
  3. It took place in Ohio which is not too far from my place, so I can manage to come there at weekend.
  4. H. and I pumped the balloons and hung them everywhere, in the house, at the front gate and at the backyard.
  5. I wore ao dai and everyone at the party said it was beautiful and I looked very nice.
  6. I danced my first dance in public with A. I paid him $1 for this.
  7. I sang the first time in public, not only one song but many. (I remembered 4, but the DJ insisted that I sang totally 7.)
  8. I met three little cute girls. They taught me how to dance the “chicken dance”. I love it! They also taught me how to do cheerleading things. I felt like I went back to my teenager. But when C. asked me how old I was, I said 28 and she said her mom was also 28. Then, at that moment, I was thrown back to my true age. Wow, I’m not that young any more. Anyway, it’s fun to travel back time sometimes, hm?
  9. I met A.’s mom. She’s such a wonderful mother-in-law that I have ever dreamed of.
  10. H. and A. made me to believe that true love still exists. I like the way they talk, hug, kiss or even make fun at each other. I hardly imagined that these two people from the different backgrounds, different worlds were born for each other. But the truth is that two will become one in the next three months. Love is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?
