Fulbright alumni toast programme’s success

Hue — Each had a story to tell.Whether it was running a marathon; the excitement of Commencement Day or the impact that studying in the United States has had on their lives and work, participants at a meeting of former Fulbright scholars in Hue last Saturday all acknowledged the programme’s success since its introduction to Viet Nam.

And all agreed: The programme has changed them all.

It has enabled them to both acquire knowledge and to develop friendships with people from different races, nationalities and cultures.

Many have been successful since their return to Viet Nam with perhaps the most notable being Deputy Prime Minister and Education and Training Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, who was granted a Fulbright scholarship in 1993.

Nhan, who could not attend the meeting held to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the programme’s introduction to Viet Nam, told its participants by letter that the programme had served as a vital diplomatic, academic and professional link between Viet Nam and the United States.

The Hue meeting was attended by more than 100 Fulbright alumni who shared their experiences; networked and discussed the programme’s future.

The Fulbright programme has spread to more than 150 countries to become a major vehicle for academic and cultural exchange since it was founded by Senator William J. Fulbright in 1945.

Its premier success has been the boosting of mutual understanding between the American people and the people of the world.

The programme began in Viet Nam in 1992, before diplomatic relations between Ha Noi and Washington were established.

Since then, more than 400 Vietnamese have been sent to the US for graduate studies and more than 200 American students and scholars have visited Viet Nam to teach and research.

Speaking at the ceremony, newly-arrived US Ambassador Michael Michalak said that his goal was to double the number of students sent from Viet Nam to the US, and this would directly support Viet Nam’s goal of having 20,000 new doctoral graduates by 2020.

The programme’s country director Tran Xuan Thao said more funds were being sought from the Viet Nam Government, universities, organisations, and businesses so that more scholarships could be awarded each year.

Alumni at the anniversary meeting ranged from some of the first Vietnamese sent to the US as Fulbright scholars in 1992 to this year’s graduates.

Truong Nu Minh Ngoc, who has just graduated with a Master’s degree in business from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, wanted to share the experience of finishing two half-marathons in the US.

"My cousin promised to take me to the Grand Canyon National Park if I ran the half-marathon with him," Ngoc said.

So she decided to enter the 13-mile (about 20km) run in Phoenix, Arizona, last January.

"I’m not very sportive, so I had to prepare," she said. "I ran everywhere I could. All around the campus and from my home to the grocery store. I tried to do two to three hours a week."

Ngoc finished in 3 hours 3 minutes. The winning time was 1 hour 15 minutes.

"I felt so good that I believed that I could do anything that I set as my goal," she said. Later Ngoc ran in and completed another half-marathon in Nashville, Tennessee.

Khuong Viet Thang, who has just finished a Master’s degree in development economics at Harvard University, was also pleased with his effort but in a different way.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates attended his school’s Commencement Day.

"I felt great when I got my degree because as you may all know Bill Gates was a drop-out from Harvard," Thang quipped.

The programme had a great impact on Vietnamese American Benny Tran’s personal, cultural and professional life.

Born and raised in the US, Benny did not speak much of his parents’ mother tongue and did not understand how they thought.

But after a one-year research programme in Viet Nam, Benny returned home and found his relations with his parents had changed dramatically because they could now communicate beyond their previous: "Go dump the trash" conversation.

The prestigious Fulbright programme also added to Benny Tran’s Curriculum Vitae and he now works for the Clinton Foundation in Viet Nam. — VNS

Moving in together

Vậy là có người quyết định dọn vào sống chung với mình. Vậy là từ ngày mai, mình sẽ ít có thời gian chit chat trước máy tính mỗi đêm. Có người tâm sự trực tiếp không phải vui hơn sao? Tối nay đọc cuốn báo Cosmopolitan đem về từ tháng trước, mình thấy có một bài viết về quyết định sống chung với nhau. Không biết ai đó đã đọc bài này chưa nhỉ? Mình thấy có mấy câu hỏi rất hay để cân nhắc trước khi quyết định sống chung với nhau.

- Can I tolerate his daily habits?( I think I can.)

- Do I feel ralaxed enough around him to reveal my flaws?(I’m not sure. Let see.)

- Have we discussed duties? Who cleans and when? Or have we agreed to hire someone?(Not yet. But you will do it all my dear because you go home from work earlier than me.)

- Will we split our rent down the middle or does it depend on whose salary is bigger?(Tough question. I don’t know your salary yet.)

- Have we set rules about how often friends and family may stay over?(Family is ok but no friends. haha…)

- Am I prepared to have someone always in my space?(Yes, I love to have someone like you around me.)

- What do our recurring fights tend to be about? Do we believe that cohabiting will help fix those issues?(We haven’t got any fight so far. Will have them soon. haha…)

- Am I hoping this will lead to our getting engaged? If so, does he know that and share the goal of mariage?(You do know it, right?)

- If we split up, how would we divide our assets?(I will take all the assets with me. Deal!)

Bài báo còn đưa ra một loạt câu hỏi khác cho “Before getting engaged” và “Before tying the knot”. Nhưng mình thấy chưa cần quan tâm đến vào lúc này.

Sẽ có người thao thức đêm nay trước quyết định lớn lao này. Còn mình cũng hồi hộp nên khó ngủ ghê. Hy vọng ngày mai sẽ là một ngày đẹp trời để mình “moving in together.”

Đây sẽ là khởi đầu tốt đẹp cho tụi mình, T. nhỉ!

Tập quên

TIỄN BẠN LÊN ĐƯỜNG

Vậy là bạn sắp đi xa… Không phải là lần đầu tiên, nhưng lần này bạn đi xa nhất và có thể là lâu nhất. Những lần trước, bạn bảo mình đừng ra sân bay, bạn sợ thấy những giọt nước mắt của mình. Và lần nào mình cũng hứa là mình sẽ không khóc. Nhưng khi bạn bay đi rồi, mình chạy xe về nhà và nước mắt lại rơi… Chắc bạn không biết đâu vì mình chẳng bao giờ kể…

Vậy mà lần này mình sẽ không đi tiễn. Bạn không cần bắt mình hứa không khóc, bạn cũng không cần hỏi mình sẽ tiễn chứ. Cả bạn và mình đều ngầm hiểu với nhau là sẽ không có sự đưa tiễn nào cả. Cuộc sống là như vậy phải không? Bạn và mình chỉ gặp nhau trong chốc lát rồi đường ai nấy đi… Nhưng bạn có hiểu rằng mình rất vui vì đã có lúc mình được là người tiễn bạn ở sân bay, có khi là người duy nhất nữa. Dù ngày mốt mình không có mặt trong số người tiễn bạn, nhưng mình sẽ nghĩ đến bạn và chúc bạn một chuyến bay tốt đẹp. Mình vui vì bạn đạt được ước mơ bấy lâu nay và mình tin bạn sẽ gặp nhiều may mắn và hạnh phúc phía trước.

Mình đang chép cho bạn những bản nhạc mà bạn nhờ mình. Khi trên máy bay, nghe những bài hát này, bạn sẽ nghĩ đến mình chứ? Mình bỗng nhớ bài hát của Phương Thanh… “Có đôi khi nào nhớ em, dù trong giây phút thoảng qua trong đời, thì xin anh hãy nhắc đến tên em thì thầm trên môi…” Bạn sẽ như vậy chứ? Và khi đó, chắc chắn mình cũng sẽ nhớ đến bạn…

Congratulations

Cường làm video clip này dễ thương quá nên mình chôm qua đây. Mình thấy nhớ Carbondale và những ngày tháng cũ thật nhiếu... Thứ 7 này là ba người còn lại của hội "Friends" cũ tốt nghiệp. Chúc anh Lý, Châu và Khánh có một ngày vui vẻ và đáng nhớ. Chúc mọi người nhiều may mắn trên con đường phía trước!
